Midnight Curry, by R.A. Mizer

"I’m grappling with the fear of losing, of being wrong for trying to touch the face of a culture I had no business touching - as if it is a museum exhibit guarded by velvet ropes."
- Chaya, Midnight Curry

Synopsis:

Chaya, is the daughter of a Caucasian father and an Indian mother. Losing both
parents at a young age, she feels disconnected from her heritage. Now grown up,
married and pregnant with her second child, a strange craving propels her to
reconnect and reconcile with her past.

Midnight Curry  Review :

This short story (novella) is a quick read, but radiates strong emotion.  What it lacks in length, it gains in it's ability to reach out to the reader to and challenge them to  perhaps reconnect with their own roots, or pasts.  I was quite impressed at how well written and full of substance this was to be the author's first official published piece of literature.

Have you ever felt lost, or like you'd forgotten to do something.  Not fully understanding one's place in the world can almost feel like a hunger.  Everyone wants to know who they are, and what they stand for.  And it is hard to do that unless you know where you came from.

Rachel writes in a poetic yet understandable fashion which makes you truly anticipate her next paragraph.  This story was easy for me to follow, and I eagerly await her next release, her first full length novel named
Resistance.

NEWLY RELEASED RESISTANCE EXCERPT:

"While the family ate, the sun rose higher in the sky. The light shone down on Arabella’s face. She was in the familiar state of wakefulness between dreaming and cognizance. Images faded from her mind as her body once more realized her limbs. She smelled Earth and felt moisture on her back. Supposing those to be fragments of a rescinding dream, she opened her eyes. The horror of the truth set in hard as she found herself looking up into the boughs of a large mulberry bush.
Sucking in shallow, panicking breaths, she rolled out from underneath the hedge and scrambled to her feet. She turned about frantically. Why was she in the garden? How had she gotten there? Tears stung her eyes as fear gripped her heart. Behind her the house loomed. Despite her mud-caked slippers, she flew toward her waiting sanctuary.
Somehow avoiding the servants she all but ran to her room and, regaining most of her wits, locked herself in the safety of its walls. A fire crackled in the hearth. A bowl of piping hot water was waiting in a basin on her dressing table. Her heart beat hard in her chest as she washed her face. She searched the mirror for changes in her appearance; there were no discernible ones though her eyes' were bloodshot and her skin white with distress. Looking into the bowl, she noticed her hands were abominably dirty, black soil caked under her fingernails. She picked it free, scrubbing vigorously until her fingers were red.

‘Oh God,’ she thought to herself. ‘Not again...’"

Necklace Properties :

This agate used in this necklace is a deep red, and features veins running through it.  They refer to these types of agates as "dragon-veined".  The color red was chosen because Red, in its most positive sense, is a color which represents courage, strength, and pioneering spirit.  Chaya demonstrated these characteristics in the story.  The other color which was chosen was black.  Black is incorporates all colors, totally absorbed into one. The psychological implications of that are considerable. It creates protective barriers, as it absorbs all the energy coming towards you, and it enshrouds the personality. Black is essentially an absence of light. No wavelengths are reflected it can, therefore be menacing; many people are afraid of the dark. In terms of positively, it communicates absolute clarity, with no fine nuances.  Black in the necklace represents Chaya's longing for yet lack of knowledge of her heritage.  It also demonstrates her determination to find clarity in melding her life with her heritage's past.
An agate was chosen for it's properties as well.  The mystical properties of the agate are as follows:  "Agate is said to enhance one's perceptiveness and to stimulate analytical capacity, and to provide balance between one's physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual states.  Agate is also said to alleviate hostilities and promote goodwill.  Agate is believed to help discern truth, accept circumstances, and is a powerful emotional healer.  Legend says that Agate improves memory and concentration, increases stamina and encourages honesty. It is believed to prevent insomnia and ensure pleasant dreams, to enhance personal courage and protect one against danger.  Agate provides a calming influence, improves perception, concentration and helps to develop and increase one's analytical talents.

Worth the Wait, by Nicole Andrews Moore

Worth the Wait Blurb:

When Sarah discovered lingerie in her husband’s
vehicle, she knew her life would be changed forever, but she never could have
predicted how much. Soon, what began as a harmless Girl’s Night Out with a
friend for a tarot card reading turned into a shocking realization that her
mother had kept a huge part of her heritage from her, and her dreams of late
suggested that her good friend Brian wanted to be more than just a good
friend.

For as long as he had known Sarah, Brian had felt an undeniable attraction to
her. The longer he knew her, the more he wanted from their friendship. He would
do anything to heal her heart and help her become who she was meant to be. He
would do everything within his power to protect her from harm and save her from
the forces that threatened to keep them apart because he knew some loves are so
special that they are worth the wait.

Review:

Worth the Wait, was definitely worth the wait to read.  It is a perfect mix of romance and paranormal.  Not your everyday romantic read by any means.  Nicole describes the main character in this sentence, "The story came to me quite easily…a woman with gifts and promise who just needs a little guidance and a whole lot of love.  Lucky for her, there is a man who has been stuck in the friend zone, but seeks so much more."

Almost every woman knows what it is like to put that one guy in the friend zone, but sometimes that guy is exactly what we need.  I promise you will not regret giving this book a read.

Below are some examples of graphic work done for Worth the Wait by LightShine Designs.
